Tancheng County is located in the most south of Shandong, usually called "South Gate of Shandong". The county has a total area of 1312.6 sq km, cultivated land of 1.2 million mu, consisting of 17 townships and towns, 871 administrative villages, with a population of 970,000. It borders on Linyi on the north, xuzhou and Pizhou on the south, faces Zaozhuang to the west and the Yellow Sea to the east. In its territory, Maling Mountain lies rising and falling from north to south, the meandering Yihe and Shuhe rivers link Shandong and Jiangsu; the No.205 National Highway and the Weishan-Donghai Highway cross here; the Lancun-Xinyi railway and the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway run to the south by the county town. For 52 years through several generations' hard work, the ancient capital of the Tan State, which was full of crumbling walls and ruined curbs in the old days, has become "A Bright Pearl of Southern Shandong" with beautiful mountains and rivers, treasured things and well-off people.
Tancheng has a history of more than 2000 years of civilization. The battle in Maling between Sun Bin and Pang Juan left a brilliant pocture book of war between the Qi State and Wei State; Confucius consulting Tan Zi resulted a much-told story through thousand years. The prime ministers of the Han Dynasty Yu Dingguo and Xue Xuan, well-known atheist thinker and astronomer He Chengtian, outstanding poets Xu ling, Bao Zhao, and He Xun all made great contributions here for China's civilization. Liu Zhiyan, the organizer and leader of 'Cangshan Insurrection", described a vigorous scene of the modern history of revolutionary struggle in Southern Shandong with his integrity and patriotic feeling. There are many historical relics in the territory of Tancheng. The ancient capital of the Tan State still keeps its style and features. The ancient Maling Mountain Path is majestic. Under the "Old Holy Tree", people sing and dance to extol the good times. By the side of the Black Dragon Pool, sightseers walk back and forth. All the relics are full of flavor of the Chu State culture.
Since liberation, especially since the reform and opening up, Tancheng County Party Committee and the Government have united and led the people of the county, taken the hold of opportunity and sought development, the economic construction and all undertakings are striking. In 2000, the county realized the gross domestic production of 4.89 billion yuan, total financial income of 263 million yuan, and net per capital income of 2,495 yuan for peasants. The brand strategy is carried out in the rural economy.. The county is selected as '100 National Advanced Counties in Making Plain Green by Planting Trees", "National Specific Animal Epidemic Prevention Demonstrative County", "Demonstrative County for Cross-Century Young Farmer Training", "National Huaihe River Harnessing Project Construction County," "China's 200 Largest Counties in Grain Production", "Commodity Grain Base County", "Basis County for Improving Breed Pigs", "Advanced County of Sports", "Advanced Unit in Developing and Constructing the Land of Specialty", and is awarded the titles of "Gingko"s Home of China" and "Willow's Home of China". The Shuhe River Harnessing and the Yihe River consolidating have been finished, which basically eliminates the hidden trouble of flood of the Yihe and Shuhe rivers. Thus the county is chosen as "National Model County of Drought Resistance Service".
Tancheng County has abundant natural resources and mineral resources. The verified metal and nonmetal mineral reserves with mining value amount to more than 120 kinds. Coal, iron, barite and lime stone are rich in reserves. The reserves of diamond rank at the forefront in Shandong . The yield of rice, wheat, maize and peanut increases steadily. Rich resources promote the industrial development of the county. State-owned enterprises and those with annual sales income over 5 million yuan amount to 52. An industrial system with seven large trades, i.e. building materials,, chemicals, textile, foodstuff, garments, machinery and paper making, has formed tentatively. Individual and private enterprises extend rapidly, amounting to 43,200, with more than 200,000 employees. With the steps of opening up speeding up in the county, 29 foreign-funded enterprises have been established, with contracted foreign capital of 250 million USD, actually-used foreign capital of 2.18 million USD, earning foreign exchanges of 8.12 million USD through self-handled export. There are 85 all kinds of specialized and distribution marlets in the county, with an annual trade volume of 870 million yuan. There is a complete hardened road network and support facilities. Every village is connected with highway, and every household is provided with electricity, telephone and cable TV. More than 95% of the people use tap water.
Tancheng enjoys exceptional advantages of tourism resources. The Ancient Maling Mountain Path is mysterious and magnificent. Historical relics spread every where, such as Pang Juan Ditch, Hengu Cliff, Arrow Hole Stone, Tiger Cliff, Immortal Youwu Cave, Confucius-Visited Place, A North-South Narrow Valley, Dutiful Woman's Tomb, Master Yu's Tomb, Ancient Capital of the Tan State, Tan Zi's Temple, Roof Inclining Pavilion etc. The first gingko tree of China is well known overseas. The ancient chestnut orchard and gingko orchard make visitors forget to return.
Tancheng is also a natural and ideal base for shooting movies and TV plays. In recent years, some movies and TV plays such as Happy Song, Wild Fire, Descendants of the Old Holy Tree, China's Moon, Well-off Families etc. have been shot in Tancheng.
